First Time Sewers

Project type

First Time Sew

Date

June 12/2026

I decided to jump into sewing for the first time and In this project I describe step by step on how and what I did and all the feelings of accomplishment, struggle and the pursuit of not giving up looks like.

Husband "I need new work jeans" he says as he hangs up his jeans looking at me in frustration. My inner fashionista inside me said "I'm on it! I can sew them, I can do it" With confidence he gives me his jeans and at this point I already studied the basics on how to set up the sewing machine. This was my first offical clothing project!!! I was super excited to get at it and see what will happen.

At first even with the excitment I had to master and overcome PROCASTINATION and then feelings of self-doubt. Anytime you begin a new thing there's always an element of fear and self-doubt that creaps in that says. "can i actually do this?" "will I be able to?" "What if it doesn't work" "Will my husband be ashamed of me?" Will I be embarrassed? The point of this project is to express to you guys how difficult something new can be but also on the flip side how rewarding it can be if you just GO FOR IT.

It took me weeks looking at his jeans and the huge rip in the buttox area before i finally pushed past the "what ifs I can't" and grabbed the jeans and ran downstairs before I changed my mind. Literally the only thing standing in between you and the new thing you want to do is, well, you! During those weeks I procastinated and sat in my head like, which is WRONG. The thing to do when you want to do something you're passionate about something that gets you going makes you feel alive is NOT TO THINK TOO MUCH. The moment you decide to think and think and think on it is when it doesn't get done. You need to stop that. It's IMPORTANT TO THINK yes of course but the operative words here are "not too much" . And for pushing past fear? Well, that' is something inside you have to find and literally like NIKE says, JUST DO IT.

My hands are trembling and excitement built up inside of me as I set up the sewing machine with the thread and did all the steps that I wrote in my first project (please see projects for further information). I had to pull up you-tube again because I needed to brush up on my skills I learned from a few weeks back.

So. The stitch began... stitch stitch stitch the sound of the needle made on the jeans and the feeling i'm telling you when you're looking for your purpose in life, the feeling of the sttiches going through my fingers and see it working on the ripped jeans sewing them up i LIT up from the inside and something deep down in my soul was so agreeable with this action it's like I was DESIGNED to sew.. and possible design (but more on that later). Something stirred deep inside me as I saw the stich almost finished at the bottom i pressed the pedal faster , stopped, reversed the pedal up the line of the stich as I learned before and what got me stuck is how to finish the last step. So I just pulled the jeans out and cut the strings connected to the stich and held them up. They were fixed!! NO MORE RIP. I was exhilarated by the feeling of accomplished and so deeply proud of myself I did that. I mean it stayed in tact and everything.

I rushed up the staris with my victory jeans and showed me husband and what's more was his smile when he put them on and there was no more hole. The only thing i may critique on was that i put the stitch on the OUTISDE of the jeans where it should have been inside so you can't visible see the string. "oh well" I thought to myself it did the job and that was the most important thing.

When you do something you are curious about and something inside tells you to learn this thing that your soul keeps nudging you is right about there's a deep sense of completness excitement and feelings of self-accomplisment and makes you come a live even if it's a little. These are all clues and hints t hat you're on the right track what GOD PUT YOU ON THIS EARTH FOR. And i can confidently say after 36 years of age , I'm finally doing something that is important to me something that I know i can be extraordinary at if i keep at it and something that suits my inner me, the fashionista in me.

The purpose of this project was to express to you readers that if I can push past fear to do something new and something that excites me, so can you. We're all living this life figuring things out stepping stones along the way and I know in myself this stepping stone of sewing and dealing with fashion and clothes is meant for me, and this small project confirmed that because of how happy and fulfilled it made me even with a small thing as sewing up a pair of ripped jeans. Imagine what the feelings will come when I keep at it and learn and learn and practice and practice. The possibilities are endless. GO FOR IT. GO FOR WHAT MAKES YOU CURIOUS and interests you, don't follow the path people tell you on based on their own interests, follow your own. Period.
